When you hear people use terms like Montpielier, Rockville, Beaverdam, Elmont, Ashland and Doswell, you are being told about areas that are part of Western Hanover County. Western Hanover is separated from Eastern Hanover by the Route 301 and from Henrico more of less along Interstate 295. The Atlee area, although a part of 36 is more centrally located along the 95/295 interchange and is the most dense area of the county with larger subdivisions such as Ash Creek, Milestone, Fox Head and Kings Charter.
Route 1 (Old Washington Highway), Route 54 and Route 33 (Staples Mill Road) carry the majority of the traffic in Western Hanover.

Scotchtown served as home to Patrick Henry for 6 key years during the American Revolution. It is located off Route 54 in Western Hanover.
With the exception of the subdivision heavy Atlee area and the quirky, but fun, Town of Ashland (home to Randolph Macon College), Western Hanover is predominantly a rural environment with farms, large lot subdivisions and homes on acreage. The large majority of homes in this area are on wells and/or septic systems due to its rural nature.
